Facts About Sweden
Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe.
At 449,964 sq km (173,720 square miles), Sweden is the third largest country in Western Europe but is one of Europe's most sparsely populated countries – 84% of the population lives in urban areas, which take up only 1.3% of the total land area. Perhaps for this reason Sweden is known for its peaceful forests, mountains, and wilderness. About one-sixth of Sweden's land lies north of the Arctic Circle.
Europe's Last Wilderness
With 90% of the population living in southern Sweden, Swedish Lapland in the north is known as "the last wilderness." A holiday in Lapland lets you escape the stresses of modern life. You breathe fresh, clean air and relax your mind in wide-open spaces. Nature thrives here, and there's plenty of room for dogsledding, skiing, and other outdoor adventures.
Swedish Mentality
Swedes enjoy a high standard of living, and the country is generally perceived as modern and liberal. Nature conservation, environmental protection, and energy efficiency are all held in high regard.
Considered one of the world's most advanced civilizations today, Sweden's ties to its rural heritage are ever-present in the country's love of nature and simplicity. A longing to be back in the little red cottage in the depths of the forest or surrounded by sweeping views from the top of a mountain are never far from the nation's psyche.
A rare combination – a strong love of the modern on one hand, and a passion for natural scenery and simple cultural heritage on the other, embodies an attitude that is typically Swedish.
Take an active holiday in Swedish Lapland and experience it for yourself!
