A Peaceful Wilderness at One of Europe’s Largest Nature Reserves

Imagine exploring by dogsled or on foot a beautiful, sparsely-populated nature reserve.

A peaceful wilderness where wolverines, arctic fox, elk, and lynx wander through virgin forests ... where golden eagles nest in the trees and ptarmigan take shelter close to the ground.

Vindeljällen, where our tours take place, is one of Europe's largest nature reserves, covering 5,600 square km (2,160 square miles).

Hemavan Village, where our accommodation is based, is on the edge of the reserve, which is often referred to as "The Last Wilderness."

The Sámi People

The Sámi people, sometimes known as Laplanders, are an indigenous people who have lived in the mountains of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia for thousands of years. Some archaeological findings date them back as long as 5,000 years ago.

Traditionally the Sámi have had a variety of livelihoods, including fishing, hunting, and sheepherding, but their best known occupation is reindeer herding.
